Peralta Unveils Capital Improvement Projects for I.S. 141 in Astoria

State Senator Jose Peralta

State Senator Jose Peralta (D-Corona, East Elmhurst, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Woodside) yesterday announced state funding for much-needed capital improvement projects for The Steinway Intermediate School 141Q, located in Astoria.

Peralta was able to secure funding of $105,000 for the proposed projects that would level the street on one side of the building for beautification purposes and would renovate one bathroom in the school. More than 1,100 students are enrolled in the school. The principal, Miranda Pavlou, parents, educators and students were present during the announcement, which took place in the school’s auditorium.

“Students are the present and the future of our communities, and this is why we must ensure we provide them with the best possible learning environment. It is crucial that students attend class in a comfortable and dynamic setting. I am glad I was able to secure state funding so the school can go ahead with these capital improvement projects,” said Peralta.

The proposal includes leveling the 38th Street side of the school building to build a garden, installing security cameras and renovating one of the two bathrooms at the main entrance of the school, an academic center that is highly involved with its surrounding Astoria community.

Peralta was able to secure state funding to numerous schools in his district. Some of the projects at other schools include:

·         P.S./I.S. 127: New air conditioning.

·         P.S. 69: Upgrade the Public Address System.

·         P.S. 89: Upgrade the school’s auditorium and 44 new air condition units.

·         I.S. 227: Upgrade the electrical system in all classrooms.

Avella Calls on NYC to Give a Break to Homeowner Wanting to Sell Home

Sen. Tony Avella

State Sen. Tony Avella (D-College Point, Whitestone, Bayside, Little Neck, Douglaston, Floral Park, Beechhurst, Malba, Auburndale) yesterday stood with local homeowner Keith Mazzarello to call on the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) to repair Mr. Mazzarello’s sidewalk and the Department of Transportation (DOT) to remove any open violations on the sidewalk as soon as possible so that Mr. Mazzarello can go through with the idea of selling his property.

Currently, all of Mr. Mazzarello’s sidewalk flags have a Notice of Violation (NOV) due to damage from City tree roots. However, until the NOV is removed, Mr. Mazzarello will have difficulty selling his house.

The house is located at  171-19 45th Avenue in Flushing

Crowley Opposes Republicans Two Week Funding Resolution

U.S. Representative Joe Crowley/via Facebook

U.S. Rep. & House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley (D-Sunnyside, Astoria, College Point, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Corona, Woodside and parts of the Bronx) said yesterday he oppossed the House passage of a resolutuon to fund the government for two more weeks and avoid a shutdown.

The House voted 235 to 193, with 18 Republicans voting against the bill to fund the government and 14 Democrats supporting the legislation.

“I am opposed to the Republicans’ continuing resolution. It fails to provide thousands of children with access to health care or lift up our teetering economy. It leaves DREAMers without the stability and safety they deserve and fails to invest in transportation and infrastructure,” said Crowley.

“Republicans control the House, Senate, and the White House. Yet, they have failed to pass any meaningful legislation to help hard-working Americans. Their lack of vision for how to strengthen America and improve the lives of those trying to make ends meets have brought us to today — to the brink of a government shutdown. Republicans will clearly need Democrats to avoid disaster. We have made clear our votes will require an investment in our priorities,” he added.
