Meng Wants FDA To Keep Harmful Chemicals Out Of Food
U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Bayside, Flushing, Forest Hills, Rego Park, Fresh Meadows, Glendale, Kew Gardens, Maspeth) last week sent a letter to the head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) calling for the agency to address the threat that food additives pose to children.
The Congresswoman’s letter to FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb is in response to a new American Academy of Pediatrics report which found that certain chemicals in processed food and food packaging may be dangerous to children’s health.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our kids,” said Meng. “As Co-Chair of the Congressional Kids’ Safety Caucus and as the mother of two young boys, I am gravely concerned that American families and children are unknowingly exposed to chemicals that may cause them harm. I urge the FDA to carefully review this report and make the needed regulatory changes that would ensure these additives are safe for kids. I stand ready to assist Commissioner Gottlieb in any possible way should he decide to implement the report’s recommendations, and I look forward to his response to my letter.”

Sanders Reminds Residents Of JFK Redevelopment Meeting
State Sen. James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway) is encouraging residents to attend the Port Authority’s Community Outreach Meeting tonight on the $10 billion JFK Redevelopment Plan.
Sanders is working to help Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs) to be in a position to bid on contracts that will be awarded for JFK, which is located in his district.

Avella Receives Gun Control Award from Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America
State Sen. Tony Avella (D-College Point, Whitestone, Bayside, Flushing, Jamaica Estates, Fresh Meadows, Bellerose, Floral Park, Jamaica, Douglaston, Little Neck, Auburndale, Kissena Park, Briarwood) recently received the Candidate of Distinction designation from Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
The designation highlights Avella’s strong support for gun control and his record of results.
In 2013, Avella helped pass the SAFE Act, the toughest gun control law in the nation, and voted this year to close the loophole allowing domestic violence perpetrators to possess firearms and long guns.
Avella has sponsored legislation for waiting periods on firearms until background checks are completed, and has co-sponsored legislation for extreme risk protection orders, establishing the firearm violence research institute, and prohibiting possession of bump stock devices.
“I am proud to have voted for the SAFE Act, the toughest gun control law and requiring the surrender of firearms from domestic violence perpetrators. I look forward to continue working with Moms across the state for passage of stronger gun control laws to keep our communities safe,” said Avella.
Koo, NYPD, Chinese-American Planning Council Award Graduates Of Youth Study Group
City Councilman Peter Koo (D-Downtown Flushing, Murray Hill, Queensboro Hill) today will celebrate the graduation of 15 students from the Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) and the 109th Police Precinct’s first tutoring class at the precinct station house.
Over the summer the CPC partnered with the 109th precinct to host study groups in mathematics and English language arts for eight weeks, helping local children to succeed.
The event is slated for 5:30 p.m., today, August 8 at the 109th Police Precinct, 37-05 Union Street in Flushing.
