Nolan To Hold Groundbreaking At The Academy Of American Studies

Assembly member Catherine Nolan (D-Sunnyside, Ridgewood, Astoria, Woodside, Long Island City, Maspeth, Queensbridge, Ravenswood, Dutch Kills, Blissville) will mark the beginning of construction of the new Academy of American Studies building next week.

Alongside Nolan at the groundbreaking will be School Construction Authority (SCA) President Lorraine Grillo, Principal William Bassell.

The new building is planned to open in September 2020 on the site of the current school yard and parking lot.

The event is slated for 3 p.m., Monday, Dec 3, at 28-01 41st Avenue in Long Island City.


Weprin To Host ‘Fighting Fire & Fraud’ Seminar on Holiday Season Safety

Assembly member David I. Weprin (D-Richmond Hill, Glen Oaks) will join officers from the New York Police Department (NYPD), firefighters from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), representatives from Con Edison, and volunteers from the American Red Cross for a free seminar on staying safe during the holiday season today.

According National Fire Protection Association:

  • One of every four home Christmas tree fires is caused by electrical problems.
  • Although Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious. On average, one of every 32 reported home Christmas tree fires results in a death compared to an average of one death per 143 total reported home fires.
  • A heat source too close to the tree causes one in every four Christmas tree fires.
  • The top three days for home candle fires are Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Christmas Eve.
  • Candles start two out of five home decoration structure fires.

The event is slated for 10:30 a.m., today, Nov. 30, at Hillcrest Jewish Center, at 183-02 Union Turnpike in Fresh Meadows.


Queens Lawmakers Hold Community Groundbreaking At Astoria Park

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and City Council member Costa Constantinides (D-Astoria, parts of Woodside, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights) alongside the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation will break ground on a new soccer field for Astoria Park tomorrow.

The renovation is at the center of a $30 million investment by the City to rehabilitate one of the most famous parks in the system.

The event is slated for 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, at Hoyt Avenue North and 19th Street in Astoria.
