There’s going to be a massive turnover in the New York City Council in the next election because of term limits but one city councilmember might be giving up his seat sooner than expected.

City Councilmember Rory Lancman (D-Kew Gardens Hills, Pomonok, Electchester, Fresh Meadows, Hillcrest, Jamaica Estates, Briarwood, Parkway Village, Jamaica Hills, Jamaica) is considering giving up his seat early for an as of yet unknown position in Governor Andrew Cuomo’s administration multiple sources told City and State, which broke the story on Thursday evening.

A spokesperson from Lancman’s office declined to comment when QCP called to confirm whether or not the councilmember would be stepping down for the mystery position in the governor’s office. The spokesperson also declined to comment on when the mystery might be resolved.

Governor Cuomo’s office could not be reached for comment.

Lancman is term limited, leaving his seat open in the upcoming 2021 City Council elections. According to the New York City Campaign Finance Board, there are already seven candidates vying for his seat, including former City Councilmember James Gennaro who currently works in the Cuomo administration.

If Lancman were to step down before his term ends, it would trigger a special election for the district. There is already one expected special election for a Queens city council seat, City Councilmember Donovan Richards (D-Arverne, Brookville, Edgemere, Far Rockaway, Laurelton, Rosedale, Springfield Gardens) who is expected to win the Queens Borough President race in November.

Lancman ran for Queens District Attorney in 2019 but dropped out days before primary day and endorsed the eventual winner, Melinda Katz.
