The Working Families Party announced on Wednesday that it’s endorsing two Queens candidates in next year’s New York City Council elections.

City council candidates Tiffany Cabán and Jennifer Gutiérrez were among the four candidates endorsed by the party in their first slate of endorsements for the 2021 elections. The candidates are “working class champions,” the release said, and were chosen for their commitment to putting their community ahead of special interest groups.

“The working-class families, immigrants and people of color who make our city run are facing a deepening housing crisis, stagnant wages, underfunded schools and hospitals, and a harmful police force that does not deliver community safety,” said New York Working Families Party State Director Sochie Nnaemeka. “The Working Families Party is building a slate of progressive champions who we know will put working people, people of color and immigrants first — because they come from these communities.”

State Senator Jessica Ramos, who received the Working Families Party endorsement when she ran for office, also endorsed the candidates.

“New Yorkers need champions unafraid to make history for working families,” said Ramos. “Together with the Working Families Party, we’re growing our people power — bringing together grassroots activists and supporters in to help us transform New York.”

Cabán is a public defender and rising progressive star who ran an unsuccessful but incredibly tight race for Queens District Attorney in 2019. She is running for the District 22 seat which is currently held by term-limited City Councilmember Costa Constantinides.

“The WFP’s endorsement is a progressive badge of honor, demonstrating our campaign’s commitment to the values that matter most to our communities — from ending the carceral system to guaranteeing affordable housing to establishing a care economy that works for working people,” said Cabán.

Gutierrez is an organizer, and activist running for term-limited City Councilmember Antonio Reynoso’s seat in District 34. Gutierrez is Reynoso’s chief of staff.

“With the strength of the Working Families Party behind us, I know grassroots leaders, community members and activists will be throwing down for our campaign – making calls, talking to neighbors and getting out the vote from now until Election Day,” said Gutiérrez.

Both Cabán and Gutierrez received endorsements from the new labor coalition Road to Justice earlier this month.

The other two candidates included on the Working Families Party’s first slate of endorsements were Amanda Farías and Sandy Nurse who are running for districts in the Bronx and Brooklyn.
