The New York Working Families Party (WFP) announced their third wave of endorsements for next year’s city council elections on Thursday adding three more Queens candidates to their list.

The party endorsed city council candidates Moumita Ahmed, Jaslin Kaur and Harold Miller for openings in city council in Queens.

“From championing immigrant justice to leading the fight for school equity in their neighborhoods, Harold, Jaslin, and Moumita, are each trusted and proven leaders in their communities,” said New York Working Families Party Director Sochie Nnaemeka. “We’re fired up to hit the pavement for this group, and to work with them to rebuild our city for working people when they win come November.”

Ahmed, Kaur, and Miller are joining a cadre of five other candidates. In their first round of endorsements, which were released in September, WFP endorsed city council candidates Tiffany Cabán and Jennifer Gutierrez. Last month, they added candidates Juan Ardila, Aleda Gagarin and Felicia Singh to the list. The addition of Ahmed, Kaur, and Miller brings the number of WFP endorsed city council candidates from Queens to eight.

“2021 is right around the corner — which means New Yorkers are just six months away from heading to the ballot box to elect the leadership that will steer us out of this moment of crisis. Queens has long suffered from deep, structural inequity and injustice, and we need bold, progressive leaders to tackle it head on,” said Nnaemeka. “That’s why the WFP is throwing down in City Council races in every corner of the borough—and today, we’re proud to welcome these three candidates to our movement.”

Ahmed is running in the February special election to replace former City Councilmember Rory Lancman in District 24. She is a Bangladeshi immigrant and grassroots community organizer.

“When I first entered politics, the Working Families Party is where I found my organizing home,” said Ahmed. “Their commitment to working-class families like mine is unmatched. I am humbled and proud to have their endorsement as we fight together for a city that works for all of us, not just a few.”

Kaur is the daughter of Sikh-Pakistani immigrants and an advocate for survivors of sexual assault. She is running in District 23 to replace City Councilmember Barry Grodenchik who announced his retirement at the end of his term despite being eligible for re-election.

“Every person deserves a dignified life with a certain and liveable future. I know that with the endorsement of the Working Families Party, we will achieve that together for my neighbors in District 23,” said Kaur. “It’s time to put the working class first, and I’m excited to organize alongside leaders who have been entrenched in this fight for years.”

Miller is an activist who’s worked with community organizations such as Acorn and New York Communities for Change. He running to replace term-limited City Councilmember I. Daneek Miller in District 27.
“I’m so proud to have the endorsement of the Working Families Party. Their faith in me to build a city that puts working people ahead of wealthy special interests will help power our grassroots campaign,” said Miller. “To ensure a just recovery I will be the voice Southeast Queens needs to put our families first and get things done.”
